OxygGuards clearly differentiate between low-flow, normal-flow and high-flow oxygen flowmeters. They are fitted only to low-flow and high-flow oxygen flowmeters to form a clearly marked physical barrier that can be swung aside to allow oxygen tubing connection.

OxygGuard attaches to an oxygen flowmeter, providing:
Gas misconnection is reduced by requiring a conscious decision with two-handed action to attach tubing to low-flow and high-flow oxygen outlets. Normal-flow oxygen is left unchanged and is freely accessible.

Gas misconnection
Accidental delivery of the wrong gas to patients is a world wide problem that can result in severe adverse patient outcome. Low-flow, normal-flow, and high-flow oxygen flowmeter outlets have similar size and colour adapters. It is easy to connect the wrong flowmeter to patients. OxygGuards highlight Low-flow and high-flow oxygen flowmeters, and reduce the risk of misconnection.

Development
OxygGuard was developed by Flinders Biomedical Engineering, in response to requests from multiple hospitals, to reduce the risk of misconnections involving Low-flow, normal-flow and high-flow medical oxugen.
Fitting
It is suggested that OxygGuards be fitted by clinical engineering or biomedical engineering but this is not essential. Installing OxygGuards provides a good opportunity to audit flowmeters, and for non-standard devices to be replaced.
Fitting is simple: unscrew outlet nozzle, fit disk to outlet, screw nozzle back up to hold in place. Adhesive may be used if required. The swing is kept facing forward by an indexing system on the disk.

OxygGuard models
There are two low-flow and two high-flow OxygGuard models to suit Oxygen flowmeters with 14.5mm diameter outlet spindles. Oxy Guards may also be made for CIG, Comweld, Anaequip, Precision Medical and Therapy Equipment flowmeters.
An OxygGuard consists of a disk and a labelled swing. The disk locates on the Oxygen flowmeter with an indexing system which ensures that the label always faces the front.
The swing hangs freely from the disk. Adhesive may be used on the threaded nozzle to lock the disk and swing into place. This ensures the correct nozzle is kept on the oxygen flowmeter.
Fitting OxygGuards is simple: unscrew flowmeter outlet nozzle, fit disk to outlet, screw nozzle back up to hold in place (using adhesive if required). |

Quantity
A 500 bed hospital with 20 low-flow oxygen flowmeters and 100 high-flow oxygen flowmeters needs 120 OxyGuards.
It is likely that 5% extra OxygGuards will be needed in the 12 months after installation as flowmeters, stored in draws and cupboards, are discovered.
